...put "-gate" on the back of something to label some political scandal (or near-scandal), as a reference to the infamous Watergate affair in the 70's. I hate it. It bugs the shit out of me. Even more than when they used to put the names of two dating celebrities together to form one name (Bennifer, Brangelina, etc.) Strippergate. Monicagate. Now, with Obama, "Bittergate." I don't even care if they think they're being ironic -- it's aggravating and shows a decided lack of writing prowess. <growl> |
