BNL Chatter / Archives / My Heart Hurts

I just found out that someone I dated in 8th grade died of cancer. I have not seen or heard anything about this girl since about 1977. She dropped out of high school when we were sophomores.

As I do every morning, I opened the obits to see if anyone I knew had died. And there she was. 47 years young.

I am suddenly sad. Its a strange feeling. I've thought about her several times over the past 30 years, and just recently asked if anyone on our reunion group had seen or heard anything about her.

We dated for about 2 months, I had her in several classes and would walk her home. We only kissed a few times.

She ended up running with a pretty wild crowd and I think she messed around with drugs early in high school and hence the drop out.

Still it sounds like she had a wonderful life, a good husband and 4 kids.

My heart hurts for them.

I'm so sorry, David. It is always a shake-up when someone our age dies…..

thanks guys….

How ironic..this noon I am at the grocery store and I ran into my 8th grade Algebra teacher, Clare Bulkow. I see him alot and he had my kids in class too. He's now retired.

After a short chit chat, he said to me "Hey..I saw someone your age in the paper this morning had died…did you remember her?"

After I told him my story, he said.."You know..now I remember you two sat by each other and if I am not mistaken, I remember you walking her home."

*sigh*

I thought your Algebra teacher was Al-Khwarizmi.

I met Kim at Urban Junior High School in Sheboygan, WI during the 7th grade. It was around 1975.

She was a beautiful girl who always shared a smile and treated everyone with kindness. We had several classes together and during 8th grade, we briefly dated. A typical school crush. I often walked her home after school and carried her books for her. I remember she lived behind North High School near 11th Street.

I lost touch with Kim during our early high school years. I had often thought of her through the years and wondered where life had led her.

My wife and I met at North High school and she too remembers Kim as someone who had a very kind heart and gentle smile.

When I read of her passing this morning in the Sheboygan Press, I was both shocked and deeply saddened.

My deepest sympathy to her husband Fred, her children and all her loving family.

Kim may have left Sheboygan many years ago, but she will be remembered by the North High Class of 1979 as a sweet person and a friend we enjoyed having in classes.
