BNL Chatter / Barenaked Advice / nasty sinuses

alright nurses, question for you guys, how can I declog my sinuses without having to live on Bendryl maximum for the upper respitory????

The last couple weeks I have had to use this stuff more than I like… the problem is, everytime I stop taking them for a couple days, cause the sinuses are manageable, then it kicks up again….. I am also coughing (bronchitis cough) which will also die down then kick it up to match the sinus drainage…...

it is not green mucous like in the beg. but it is still mucous like WHOA….. any OTC or home remedy that you ladies can suggest?

I would do Afrin nasal spray twice a day for two days only, and as soon as you notice the congestion improving from that, start using a neti pot full of warm salt water.  That may help.

I can suck on your nose if you want.

HAHA….. Richard, I would totally take you up on that if the idea of *my* snot in *your* nose didn't skeeve me out so much ROFL…..

and thanks Jen, I am gonna look into trying that stuff cause I think allergies are just insane this year

This is the second time you've recommended a neti pot, Jen - I think I need to get one because I tend to get nassy sinuses, too and it normally moves into my bronchial tubes.

Be really careful with this, tj - it can really become serious if you let it go.  I hope they get better soon.

yeah, the neti pot sounds like voodoo… but the saltwater hydrates the sinuses and the salt keep the bacteria from taking hold.  But if you're completely clogged up, the water can't even get into the nasal passages.  You have to be careful with decongestants, though, because if you use them too long you can get rebound congestion and become dependent on the decongestant.

Wow, I never understood how a person can become dependent on decongestants, but that totally makes me understand.

Jen, thanks for all the help with this, it is much appreciated and as far as the sinuses, well, I haven't taken any thing since friday and I am *knock on wood* doing alright as of right now…. still a little cough what not going on but even that is doing much better…... but the neti pot is something I am going to look in to because there are usually 2-3 times a year I can look forward to sinus issues…..

Peg, yeah I know…. it sucks too cause it seems like it takes so long to get rid of it and it is hard to warrant a DR. trip without insurance…. especially since I know that the cough part will last about as long no matter what (it usually takes about 3 or 4 weeks for the cough to go away with or with out meds)......
