BNL Chatter / Archives / Ate as a kid...but not today

What kids of foods did you eat a ton of as a kid, but cannot stand the sight of today?

Anything Chef Boyardee
(Beefaroni or Spaghettios come to mind)
Fish Sticks
Banquet TV Dinners
Tuna Pot Pies

Keep in mind…I grew up BEFORE microwave ovens were so widespread and you had to drive six miles to find a McDonalds.

Oh and my father got a thrill from buying "10 for " specials. He would come home from the grocery store with 10 cans of a Spaghettios (with and without the little franks), 10 assorted pot pies and 10 TV dinners.

The words Salisbury Steak makes me run for cover.

LOL and stale Hostess products. We have a Hostess outlet and he was their best customer. 10 packs of expired twinkies and ho hos, every flavor of fruit pies you can imagine.

One week, he won the "red star" game. If you had a red star on your receipt, the entire order was free.  I thought we had won millions in the lottery the way he danced up the sidewalk…..

I've strayed from pretty much all the "sweets" I had as a kid.

Marshmallows, for the most part are revolting to me now. (with the exceptions of S'mores and in Hot Chocolate) the concept of them in cereal is even worse.

Not a big fan of frosting but as a kid we would eat it out of the can.

Anything having to do with cake I tend to avoid. I'm a pie guy. Any innuendo you can take from that is expected.

I can't really think of any foods that I liked then that I don't like now but there were a lot of things that we used to eat all the time when I was a kid (mostly because we had no money) that I have not eaten since then.

Dinty Moore Beef Stew on bread

Chip beef and gravy on toast (shit on a shingle as my mom called it)

Salisbury steak (the family size frozen tray with like six slabs and brown gravy)

TV dinners (always turkey and dressing for me)

Mock pizza on hamburger buns

Fish sticks…ick

TV dinners…thought they were such a treat as a kid…would probably chew my leg off before eating one now…

Campbell's soup…the "chicken" in those things grosses me out…

Powdered sugar…can't stand the stuff now…makes me gag…probably because I ate a whole box of it as a kid and got sick from it…

Kiska…it's a Polish Blood and Barley sausage…loved it as a kid…I get sick just thinking that I used to eat it. ewwwwwww….

But I still LOVE spaghettios…especially with franks!

it's only me Sep 25th 5:01 pm

Pumpkin pie

Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Now I can only eat my mom's homemade soup.

Cheese sandwiches

Peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches with grape jelly. I just started eating them again within the past few years but only if made with strawberry jelly.

Anything loaded with sugar

moxie Sep 25th 5:39 pm

Darlene…I always had a feeling you were a girl who loves her weinies. Tee hee hee.

What else did Spaghettios come with?

Plain, meatballs and franks…am I missing any?

Darlene Sep 25th 9:43 pm

Oh I'm a wienie girl alright!

I don't like the plain spaghettios as much…and the ones with meatballs will do in a pinch…but the wienies…now you're talking!

Tuna melts…. I loved them as recently as 8 or 9 years ago.  Now I really can't eat them. Still love tuna sandwiches or tuna casserole though, mmmm.

bnldavid Sep 26th 9:23 am

Repeat after me.

Tuna should not be cooked.

The smell…..*full body shudder*

well, i've recently discovered that dinty moore beef stew isn't as great as i remember. too bad i bought a six pack (smart & final). oh, but i was eating it with buttered bread.

tuna pot pie? ew. never heard of it before now. thinking of it makes me not want to eat for a week.

tj Nov 15th 7:12 pm

mostly anything with tuna in it…. I used to love it but now I will eat a tuna sandwhich under dire circumstances and it has to be prepared in a particular fashion….

like David said, tuna, under no circumstances should be cooked… the idea even makes me wretch.

although I still occasionally enjoy plain tuna (packed in water only) on buttered saltine crackers….

anyway, the other things are

superman ice cream

vienna sausages

pretty much any canned meat actually….

fish sticks *wretch*

Jessica Nov 16th 2:08 am

Chicken, fish or red meat.

The thought of downing a tall glass of cold milk makes my skin crawl.
