BNL Chatter / Barenaked Advice / Wisdom teeth

Darlene Aug 5th 5:27 pm

I honestly don't know how this works because I never needed mine removed…but…I had all of my kids in to a new dentist today

(fun…fun…replacing bad fillings and whatnot from our previous dentist…fucktard)

Jordan…who I spent 5000 on braces…and he wore them for 3 years…has 2 impacted (partial and full bony)...and the other 2 need surgical extraction as well…

I have his scheduled in 2 weeks…all of them at once.  One…I want them out as soon as possible…we spent way too much money/time getting him a nice smile…  Two…he starts classes the end of September…

I thought it best to just get it over with…

Brandon's wisdom teeth all grew in reasonably straight…they are just crowded…I scheduled him for all 4 to be removed at once…

His is just a simple extraction…

My concern…is it routine to do them all at once?  or should I break it up?  you know…top and bottom)

I thought it would be best to just get it over with…but since I never went through this…just how bad is it afterward?

I know Richard had this done recently…what did you do?

moxie Aug 5th 5:34 pm

Mine were all done at once… I don't know how routine it is. I had no problems.

I had mine done all at once - and it was a nightmare for me.  BUT, that was because I was alergic to the anethesia (they put me out) and got violently ill which caused my stitched to come out, which created a nasty infection.  That being said, I would rather have had them all out at once rather than having to go through that twice.

Richard Aug 5th 6:57 pm

I got one taken out a week before the other three because it was irritating the infection.  I'll say this, having to be functional and go to work soon after, it was a huge pain in the ass.  The holes where the teeth were healed up fine, but they botched something that caused a ton of pain when I swallowed and my freakin tongue is still numb.  In my opinion, I would much rather they took two out at a time…left side, then right side.  That way I could have had a much easier time brushing my teeth or eating something other than yogurt.

The pain is not hard to deal with.  The toughest thing is just trying to care for the wounds and not getting dry socket.  No straws, no blowing hard, and rinse often.

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once.  The top 2 were simple extractions, the bottom 2 were partially impacted.  I had it done with just novacaine.  Had stitches on the bottom.  Went to work the next day.  Never took more than 800mg ibuprofen for the pain.  I had an easy recovery.

I know personally, I hate going to the dentist and, even though the recovery was easy for me, I wouldn't have wanted to have to do it twice.

Jen Aug 5th 8:21 pm

I had all 4 out, and all were pretty severely impacted. I did fine.  It hurt afterwards but really wasn't that big of a deal. I figure anything that involves general anesthesia is better to be done once rather than twice.

Worst part was puking up blood in the car on the ride home. FUUUUUUUUUUUN.

Big Er'n Aug 5th 9:09 pm

Get 'em all out at once.  It's very painful, but I wouldn't want to have to go back!

And yes, there will be puke.

Wolfy Aug 5th 10:23 pm

I had all 5 of mine out when I was 19…  yup… I said five….  I had two right upper ones.. maybe it's a canadian thang… lol

I had no problems… I heard horror stories of people who swelled up like chipmunks.. but I put a bag of cold peas on either side of my face and I had no bruising either…

ate lots of popsicles… and mind you… I was drooling blood when the freezing was still in while I was lying on the couch….

when you are young.. you bounce back quicker… I'd do them all at once…

My husband just got his lower wisdom teeth removed on Friday. He is miserable. The pain he is having is bad, and he is unable to eat anything other than pudding and jello. We've spoken with many friends and family about this, and those who had them all removed at once, wished they had not done so because of how long it takes to recover.

Thankfully my hubby doesn't need the top ones removed.

I need all of mine out, but I am unable to have them removed due to a blood disorder.

I think getting two done at a time might be the way to go. However, it does mean going back for a round two. :/

I was a lucky one. 15 minutes and mine were out and I was back at work the next morning.

Andrew and Jenna were impacted and they took about 2 or three days to get back to normal.

I remember Jenna just crying and crying asking why we did them all at once…but in the end she was glad she only had to go through it once.

I had all four taken out at once.  They had me take a valume before I went in.

He gave me novicane and gas.  I was in and out…but woke up to him standing on something, and hitting my jaw with some mallet or something…  Mine were in there pretty impacted.  Same thing…braces for 5 years, teeth are now not that straight because they crowded in.

Pain the first day, the second day I was just taking Advil.  I did eat because they weren't hurting, got dry socket.  THAT HURT!  They had to open up the stiches again, pack it with clove packs, close it back up…and remove them again later.

That sucked beyond belief.  And tasted HORRIBLE…and didn't go away until they were removed.

But, I would still get them all done at once.

It's so weird reading about everyone else's surgery. Mine was a cake walk. I don't remember being in any pain at all… but my doctor gave me vicodin. Did y'all get painkillers?

I did everything they told me to do, and had a day or two off afterwards. Worst thing that I remember was being kind of swollen for a day.

DeeK Aug 6th 12:54 pm

Mine were all impacted, and they did it all at once.  The drugs were good, and I was fine that night… just make sure he uses the syringe thingy at home to keep the pits cleaned out… dry sockets and food in the area is the worst thing that can happen to that area.

Darlene Aug 6th 3:37 pm

Thanks guys!  I really appreciate all the advice.  Like I said…I never had to have it done…I know nothing about it.  I decided to do both boys on the same day…all of them getting pulled.  Just get it over and done with.

The doctor gave me scripts for valium for each one to take before the procedure(s)

And then they do conscious sedation for the procedure…

Should be a fun FUN weekend!  My guess is Brandon will puke his guts out…Jordan will be the pain whimp…

Hrmmmmm….wonder if he'd give me a valium too…

Big Er'n Aug 6th 11:10 pm

Darlene, I did the Valium and a local…  Try to ask if your boys can be put out.  I went into shock and was pretty traumatized by the drill thing and all of it.

C-pher Aug 7th 6:03 am

Did y'all get painkillers?

Yep, but after the first night, I didn't need them…  At least not until I got the dry socket.  Then I was sucking them back like candy.

I never swelled up like a chipmunk. Some of my friends did..but I didn't.

Richard Aug 7th 7:19 am

I had a lot of problems because apparently I had a nerve up against the root.  Two weeks ago I couldn't even swallow without having sharp pains in half of my lower jaw.  Now just my ear hurts when I swallow…but I think that's caused by me biting my numb tongue constantly.

bnldavid Aug 7th 11:11 am

I'll never forget…right in the middle the dentist had a visitor..his mother..and he showed her around the office while I was sitting there with one of those tooth elevators under my lower tooth.

I tried to talk them into letting me work that afternoon, but I had to go home and eat ice cream the rest of the day.

Next day…I was fine.

flecktone Aug 8th 6:56 am

I had all of mine done at the same time, I think two were impacted.  No problems for me.  My oral surgeon started me on an antiobiotic a couple of days before the procedure to help things heal up faster (?) and prevent an infection.

I had heard all kinds of horror stories about infection and dry sockets and the like, but no problems for me.  I had the surgery done on a Thursday morning and went out to dinner with friends on Friday evening and a Crew game on Saturday.  No problems at all.

glory Aug 8th 9:13 am

I had no problems with mine.

They gave me an ativan to take before the procedure (this was years ago) and I just barely remember them working in my mouth.

Went home and slept it off. The pain pill they gave me made me throw up, and thankfully the dentist called to check in on me. He told me to switch over to 800 mg of some over the counter pain killer and I was eating after that.

I ate regular substance food the next day, no pain whatsoever.
